Family Ancestry Notes: **      Laura Ewing later ( circa 1853 ) took her grandmother's name of Margaret.   ^^According to the 1860 Census for Shelby County, Illinois. James Griffith was born somewhere in Tennessee, and the census shows his age to be 42 and therefore, he would have been born in 1818. However, history records show his birth date to be June 10, 1793. His parents were William and Margaret (Shields) Griffith and the family lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Records show that James' first wife was Rebecca (maiden name unknown). The 1850 Census in PA. has James, 56, listed as a Farmer, Rebecca, 47, and children -- Thomas 15 in school, Margaret 12, Abel ? R. 10, Ezekiel N ? 8, and Benjamin 1. per [ Karen Greim Mullian kmillian@verizon.net ] Just when James came to Shelby County, Illinois is unknown. He was a farmer, but not a land owner, which makes it difficult to trace his whereabouts, since he was a laborer or renter of farm ground. Records do not show any children born to James and Rececca, nor were there any listed when he married Laura (Margaret )Ewing. Approximately 8 children were born to James and Laura  (Margaret ): Charles, Henry, Diannah, Ewing, Phoebe, Anna, Amos and a child that died in infancy. These names are listed in tax and census records. There were also 1 or 2 listed as "Died in Infancy". James died circa 1879 at approximately 59 years of age (This would have put his birth year at 1820?). There are no records of his death in Shelby, Fayette, Montgomery or Coles Counties in Illinois. The reasoning for that year 1879 is that this was the year Laura (Margaret ) entered the "Almshouse" with 4 or 5 children for a temporary "STAY". This was customary in those days when a widow was left with children and no means of support. (?) The 1860 census in the Shelby County Court House, Shelbyville, Illinois, records Margaret (Ewing) Griffith's age to be 37, so she was born circa 1823. This census gives her birthplace as Illinois, however, a later census in Vermillion County Court House, Newport, Indiana gives her birthplace as Wisconsin. History records also show her to be the daughter of William and Caroline Griffith. Her birth name was orginally "Laura", however she later took the name of her grandmother "Margaret". No other records of her exist until she married James Griffith. Apparently they married in the Stewardson or Shelbyville area, since Charles Abraham (Loretta M. Sbertoli's G-Grandfather) who was the oldest child, was born near Stewardson, Illinois.
